Softball Goes Undefeated Over the Weekend

The Pensacola State softball team played four games over the weekend and walked away with a spotless 4-0 record. Continue reading below for individual game recaps.

Roane State 3 PSC 5

The Pirates spotted Roane State a 3-0 lead on Friday before they finally found their footing in the fourth inning. Ana Reyes started things off with a single and eventually scored PSC's first run when Destiny Pacetti singled to center. Later in the inning Ashley Valencia drove in the second run with an RBI single to right field. In the fifth inning the Pirates capitalized on a couple of walks and RBI singles from Reyes and Valencia to take a 4-3 lead. The lead was extended to 5-3 in the sixth inning when Alexis Guzman singled and later scored on a ground ball off Madisen Nelson's bat. 

Reyes and Valencia were both 2-for-4 in the game with RBI's while four other Pirates each collected a hit. Shayne O'Connell threw a complete game and struck out nine while scattering five hits and only allowed one earned run.

Roane State 1 PSC 9 

In the second game of the doubleheader the Pirates coasted to a 9-1 win in six innings. Savannah Foster was strong in the circle for PSC as she picked up her first win of the season by throwing a complete game and striking out six. The Pirates smashed out 15 hits in the game with Madison Myers going 4-for-5 including the walk-off RBI single to end the game early. Ashley Valencia was solid at the plate going 3-for-4 with a homerun and three RBI's. Alexis Guzman was also 3-for-4 with a double while Kaeleen Koehler was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI's. Raquel Latta rounded out the hitters with multiple hits in the game as she went 2-for-2 with an RBI. 

Bishop State 0 PSC 7

The Pirates got the ball rolling early Saturday morning against Bishop State when Alexis Guzman drove a laser of a homerun off the scoreboard to make it 2-0 in the first inning. A passed ball plated another run for PSC in the fifth inning to make their lead 3-0. The sixth inning saw their bats come alive when Ashley Valencia used a single to drive in a run and was immediately followed by a 3-run homerun off the bat of Kaeleen Koehler

Shayne O'Connell was a force on the mound as she threw a no-hitter while striking out a season high 13 batters to collect her fourth win of the season. 

Pearl River 2 PSC 4

The last game of the weekend proved to be the most exciting as the Pirates fought to defeat Pearl River 4-2. Pensacola drew first blood when Madison Myers singled and stole second before Ashley Valencia ripped a ball through the right side to score her. Pearl River responded immediately when their batter led off with a homerun to make it 1-1. Later in the inning an RBI double gave the Wildcats a 2-1 that they held onto until the sixth inning. Kaeleen Koehler started things with a walk and advanced to third on a double from Alexis Guzman. With two runners in scoring position Natalie Sorensen drove a ball off the centerfield fence to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead. She then scored on a double to right center from Ana Reyes to give PSC another insurance run heading into the seventh. The defense and pitching held strong and Savannah Foster ended the game by stirking out Pearl River's leadoff. 

Foster struck out a total of nine in the game as she picked up her second win of the season. 

Pensacola State will travel to Dothan, Alabama on Friday where they will participate in the Visit Dothan Invitational hosted by Chipola College.
