Softball Wins Four Over the Weekend

The Pensacola State college softball team traveled to Sanford, Florida this past weekend to play four games and walked away with as many wins. Continue reading below for individual game recaps.

Daytona State 1 PSC 2

Both teams were strong on the rubber in the first game on Saturday, but the Pirates defeated Daytona State in a tight game.

Pensacola drew blood in the first inning when Madison Myers singled to lead things off and immediately stole second base. She then scored on a single to rightfield off the bat of Kayla Leibman

In the third inning Raquel Latta and Myers hit back to back singles and both moved into scoring position courtesy of a sacrifice bunt. Latta then scored on a ground ball from Kaeleen Koehler to make it 2-0.

Daytona got on the board in the fourth when they strung together a couple of singles and a double, but the Pirates got out of the inning with a strikeout and heads up play from shortstop Madison Myers.

The score held the rest of the game and the Pirates walked away with the win. Madison Myers and Kayla Leibman were the leading hitters in the game with each picking up two hits. Shayne O'Connell grabbed the win pitching a complete game while recording 12 strikeouts.

PSC 6 Seminole State 4

In the last game of the day the Pirates picked up a win over no. 12 nationally ranked Seminole State.

Pensacola got on the board in third when Kaeleen Koehler drove a 2-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for a grand slam. Seminole answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning courtesy of an error and double to make the score 4-1.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when the Raiders strung together some hits to plate three runs and tie the game at four.

The top of the seventh saw Kayla Leibman single and Kaeleen Koehler walk to set the table for Alexis Guzman to drive a double to the centerfield fence and score both runners giving the Pirates a 6-4 lead.

The Raiders threatened in their half of the inning, but a double play from Leibman ended the game and secured the win.

Guzman was 3-for-4 in the game with a double and two RBI's while Koehler was 2-for-3 and picked up her fourth homerun of the season. Savannah Foster started the game on the mound and threw 4.1 innings while only allowing one earned run and Shayne O'Connell came in for relief and picked up the win and struck out five in 2.2 innings of work.

Broward 1 PSC 2

Pensacola kicked things of Sunday with a tight 2-1 victory against Broward. 

Broward scored their run in the first inning and the Pirates answered immediately when Madison Myers walked and stole second before Kaeleen Koehler mashed a double to rightfield to score her.

The Pirates took the lead in the third inning when back to back singles from Kayla Leibman and Koehler setup a sacrifice fly for Alexis Guzman to make it 2-1. 

Pensacola maintained control of the game from there and secured the win. 

Savannah Foster recorded the win by throwing 5.1 innings and scattered six hits while striking out three. Shayne O'Connell earned a save by coming in to close out the game and did not allow any hits and struck out two in 1.2 innings of work.

Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) 1 PSC 6

In the final game of the weekend the Pirates downed FSCJ 6-1. They got on the board first when true to form Madison Myers led off with a single and stole second. She then scored on a single from Kayla Leibman.

The scored stayed 1-0 until the fourth inning when Alexis Guzman singled and Sadie Rusteika entered the game to run for her. With two outs Kat McGlamry singled and Rusteika advanced to third and then  both runners scored on a single off the bat of Raquel Latta. The Pirates plated another run when Destiny Pacetti scored on an single to left from Madison Myers to make it 4-0.

The lead was extended to five in the fifth inning when Guzman doubled and Kylie Chambers singled to set the table for an RBI single from Ana Reyes.

FSCJ finally got on the board in the sixth courtesy of a walk and double to make the score 5-1. In their half of the inning the Pirates answered back when Latta, Myers and and Leibman singled in succession to make it 6-1 and that ended the scoring for both teams.

Pensacola pounded out 12 hits in the game with Madison Myers leading the way going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and an RBI. Raquel Latta and Alexis Guzman each added two hits. 

Shayne O'Connell picked up her 10th win on the season by throwing a complete game and striking out 11 while only allowing four hits.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday, March 1st when they travel to Atmore, Alabama for a tournament.
