Softball Falls in Extras to Chipola

Both teams were strong on the rubber in the first game on Wednesday, but Chipola was just a bit stronger at the plate and pulled out a 2-1 win in eight innings.

It was a pitchers duel throughout as Shayne O'Connell struck out 14 batters in eight innings of work and Chipola pitcher Amy Woodham went into the eighth inning with a perfect game.

In the top of the eighth Chipola finally scored with a 2-run homerun to take the lead. The Pirates fought back in their half of the inning starting with Alexis Guzman singling to right field and Ashley Valencia singling up the middle. A long fly ball to right field from Natalie Sorensen allowed pinch runner Destiny Pacetti to tag and advance to third base. She was able to score on a ground out from Kayla Leibman to make the score 2-1, but the next batter lined out to end the game.

Game two also needed extra innings to crown a winner. Chipola used an RBI double to put a run on the board in the first inning.

The Pirates answered back in their half of the inning when Madison Myers scored on a passed ball.

Again the defense and pitching was stellar for both sides in the game. The Pirates threatened in the bottom of the seventh when a walk, hit by pitch and single loaded the bases with one out, but unfortunately they could not push a run across.

A couple of doubles and heads up base running gave Chipola a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning.

Pensacola threatened again in their half of the inning when Ashley Valencia drew a walk and Natalie Sorensen doubled to right field to put runners on second and third, but the rally fell short and the Indians held on for the win.

Savannah Foster gave an exceptional effort in the circle for the Pirates as she struck out nine batters and only allowed five hits.
