The Pensacola State softball team traveled to Tallahassee on Wednesday and returned home with a pair of important wins.
They got straight to business in the first inning and jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Madison Myers and Sadie Rusteika set the table with back-to-back singles to allow Alexis Guzman to drive in the first run of the game before Kayla Leibman hit a 2-run homerun.
Tallahassee (TCC) capitalized on a mixture of walks and singles to plate one run in their half of the inning.
The score remained at 3-1 until the top of the fourth when Natalie Sorensen was hit by a pitch and scored on a single from Kat McGlamry to make it 4-1.
A solo shot from TCC in the bottom of the fourth narrowed the lead to 4-2.
The lead was extended in the top of the sixth when the Pirates got things going with two outs on the board. Raquel Latta reached on an error and was followed by a single from Madison Myers to set up a 2-RBI double off the bat of Sadie Rusteika and make the score 6-2.
The Eagles threatened in the seventh and plated one run, but the Pirate defense held strong and the game ended with a 6-3 win for PSC.
Leading hitters for Pensacola were Sadie Rusteika (3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI), Alexis Guzman (2-for-4, RBI) and Madison Myers (2-for-4, 2 runs scored).
Shayne O'Connell picked up her 17th win of the season in strong fashion by striking out 13 batters.
Game two saw the offense continue to click and another strong pitching performance, this time from Savannah Foster.
The Pirates struck first when a double from Alexis Guzman drove in the first run and was followed by an RBI groundout from Kayla Leibman to make it 2-0.
Tallahassee used another solo homerun in their half of the inning to pull within one run.
Pensacola added another run courtesy of a fielder's choice in the top of the third to make the score 3-1. Then in the fourth inning Kat McGlamry knocked her first homerun of the year to give PSC a 4-1 lead. The Pirates used their speed to add one more run in the top of the sixth.
Kaeleen Koehler and Alexis Guzman both picked up two hits in the game including a double each.
Savannah Foster threw a complete game and scattered five hits while striking out nine.
