Pirates Split with Gulf Coast

The Pirate softball team hosted Gulf Coast State on Wednesday and split a doubleheader. Read below for individual game recaps.

Gulf Coast 2 PSC 10 (6 innings)

Pensacola got on the board immediately in the bottom of the first when Marina Goins doubled and then scored on a home run to center from Kylee Crowder. Back-to-back singles from Gabbie York and Cara Willis set the table for Kasey Markusic to drive in the third run when Gulf Coast misplayed a ground ball.

The score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the third when Kylee Crowder led off the inning with her second home run of the game. A sacrifice fly from Kasey Markusic pushed the score to 5-0.

Gulf Coast picked up one run each in the fourth and the fifth to make it 5-2. PSC responded in the bottom of the fifth when Kylee Crowder led off with a walk and later scored on a double from Gabbie York to make it 6-2.

In the bottom of the sixth Karri Pritchard hit a 2-run home run to make it 8-2 and after some defensive miscues Bre'Asia Thomas drove in the ninth run to setup the run rule. Cara Willis hit the first ball she saw to center to walk off the Commodores.

Willis was 3-for-4 in the game with an RBI and stolen base while Kylie Crowder was 2-for-3 with four runs scored, two home runs and three RBI. Bre'Asia Thomas and Gabbie York both were 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.

Gabriella Lindsey went the distance and got the win throwing six innings, striking out three and only allowing five hits.

Gulf Coast 7 PSC 5

The Pirates had a slow start to the second game they could not overcome despite rallying in the seventh.

Gulf Coast held a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth when PSC finally got on the board. With two outs Gabbie York hit an RBI double to center and scored on a single from Cara Willis to make it 5-2.

In the top of the fifth the Commodores extended their lead to 7-2. The bottom of the inning saw Karri Pritchard blast a solo home run to left to make it 7-3.

Down to their final turn at bat PSC had two runners on with two outs when Karri Pritchard just missed her third home run of the day when the ball bounced off the left field fence to plate two runs and pull the Pirates within two, but the Gulf Coast defense held and ended the game.

Gabbie York was 2-for-3 with a triple, run scored and RBI while Karri Pritchard was 2-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBI.

Kylie Jarman got the start and went three innings and struck out three while only allowing two earned runs. Madison Sabo and Yala Zwakman both threw two innings in relief.

Pensacola has a bye this weekend and will travel to Chipola on Wednesday, April 10th for an important doubleheader.
