Lady Pirates Open Season

The Lady Pirate basketball team kicked off their 2019-20 campaign this past weekend with a thrilling game against a strong Wabash Valley team.

The first home game was an exciting one and went down to the wire as Wabash Valley hit a buzzer beater to pull off the 66-65 win.

The Lady Pirates started off slow and trailed 35-26 at halftime. They battled back in the second half and was able to take their first lead of the game with 14 seconds left, but Wabash was able to push through the defense and pull off the win.

Sophomore guard Kaiya Burnett led the Lady Pirates in scoring with 19 points followed by sophomore guard Lenaejha Evans with 13 points and a game high seven rebounds. Evans also knocked down the two big free throws to give the Lady Pirates the first lead of the game.

After the tough loss the Lady Pirates traveled to Baton Rouge to face LSU-Eunice at the Lady Bear Tip-Off Classic on Saturday.

Pensacola State started off the game strong and put up 29 points in the first quarter. They held a 45-30 lead at halftime and this was too much for LSU-Eunice to overcome.

Sophomore guard Anita Payne scored eight of her team high 17 points in the first quarter. LSU-Eunice outscored PSC in the final quarter but it was not enough as the Lady Pirates won 77-69.

Sophomore center ZaMaria Polk was one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds and freshmen point guard Jordyn Neal contributed 13 points.

The Lady Pirates travel to Coastal Alabama-North Tuesday, November 5th with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
