On Saturday, January 18, the Pensacola State College (PSC) Pirates faced off against a top rival in a highly anticipated game. The Raiders and Pirates both entered the match undefeated in conference play, setting the stage for an intense showdown.
Pensacola came out strong, shooting an impressive 57.5% from the field. Their hot shooting helped them build a commanding 16-point lead by halftime. However, the team knew that the lead would be fleeting against a formidable opponent like Northwest Florida State College (NWF).
As expected, NWF chipped away at the lead throughout the second half, eventually cutting it down to just one point with little time remaining. Despite the pressure, the Pirates demonstrated their resilience, a hallmark of their season so far.
In the final two minutes, Will Vasser and Dylan Colon stepped up with clutch three-pointers, while Amarion Savage continued to attack the basket effectively. Their efforts helped PSC secure a hard-fought 63-56 victory.
Amarion Savage led the team with 18 points and seven assists, while Will Vasser contributed 14 points. Dimitri Clerc was just shy of a double-double, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds.
With this win, Pensacola State College improved to 3-0 in the first round of conference play. Head Coach Pete Pena praised his team, saying, "It's very early and there's a long way to go, but I'm really liking the attitude of our kids."
The Pirates have a bye on Wednesday and will travel to Gulf Coast on Saturday to complete the first round of conference games.
