In a thrilling showdown at Raider Arena, Pensacola State emerged victorious in the FCSAA State Championship, defeating Gulf Coast State 54-48. This victory marked a significant turnaround for the Pirates, who had previously lost all three encounters against their conference rivals. However, when it mattered most, Pensacola State rose to the occasion.
The first half was a gritty battle, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. Will Vasser and Dylan Colon played pivotal roles in powering Pensacola State to a narrow 22-17 lead at halftime. The second half continued to be a fierce contest, with neither team able to settle into an offensive groove, fighting for every point.
With just two minutes remaining, Gulf Coast held a slim two-point lead. However, a crucial turnover allowed Amarion Savage to drain a three-pointer, giving the Pirates a lead they would not relinquish. Will Vasser then sealed the game by sinking two free throws with under 30 seconds left, making it a two-possession game. Despite a flurry of desperate three-point attempts from Gulf Coast, Pensacola State held firm to secure the win.
Dylan Colon was instrumental in the victory, contributing 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. Isaiah Sutherland and Will Vasser also made significant contributions, each finishing with 11 points. Amarion Savage and Dimitri Clerc were named to the All-Tournament team, while Dylan Colon was honored as the Most Outstanding Player.
With this triumph, the Pirates have qualified for the National Tournament and will head to Hutchinson, Kansas later this week, ready to continue their impressive run.
