Pirates Win Five Over the Weekend

The Pensacola softball team finished up a busy week of games by hosting no. 18 ranked Chattanooga State Thursday before traveling to Gulf Shores for the Sun Chief Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Pirates went 5-1 to improve their overall record to 13-2. Continue reading below for individual game recaps. 

Chattanooga State 2 PSC 4 (9 innings)

A walk-off home run capped off an exciting extra inning victory for the Pirates over Chattanooga State in game one on Thursday night. 

Most of the game proved to be a pitcher's duel with Jorja Barrett holding down the fort for the Pirates.

Chattanooga did get on the board first with a solo home run in the third inning. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Susanna Soldi drilled her first home run of the season to tie the game.

A runner was placed at second to start the international tiebreaker in the eighth inning. A throwing error allowed the Tigers to take a 2-1 lead before a pop out and strikeout ended the threat.

Raquel Latta was placed on second base in the bottom of the inning and she advanced to third courtesy of a sacrifice bunt from Ellie Hansen. With a full count Sajarie Jones singled to tie the game.

The defense held for the Pirates in the top of the ninth and Susanna Soldi was placed on second to start the inning. With two outs Ashley Valencia stepped to the plate and laced a home run over the right field fence for the walk off win.

Barrett went the distance in the circle and struck out 10 batters while only allowing five hits.

Jones was 2-for-3 in the game with a stolen base while Valencia, Latta and Soldi each picked up a hit.

Chattanooga State 7 PSC 15 (5 innings)

Chattanooga wasted no time in the second game and put up six runs in the top of the first inning. Pensacola responded with one run in their half of the inning when Susanna Soldi singled and stole second before scoring on a single from Tori Fletcher.

Fletcher who got the start in the circle settled in and struck out the side in the top of the second inning.

The Pirates were able to push four runs across in the bottom of the second thanks to errors and RBI's from Maddy Childs and Fletcher.

Pensacola was trailing 7-5 going into the bottom of the fourth. With two runners on Monique Poitevin singled up the middle to make it 7-6 and then Raquel Latta singled to drive in two runs and give the Pirates the 8-7 lead. Soldi drove in two more runs before the inning ended and PSC found themselves in from 10-7. 

After a quick defensive inning Tori Fletcher started the offense with a double and then scored courtesy of a double to right center from Raquel Latta. Ellie Hansen then stepped to the plate and hit a missile over the left field fence to extend the lead to 14-7. 

Sajarie Jones followed with a double and then scored to end the game early when Madison Myers ground ball kicked into left field off the glove of a Tiger.

The Pirates pounded out 15 hits in the game with Tori Fletcher going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's and a double. Raquel Latta was 3-for-4 with three RBI's and a double while Madison Myers was 3-for-5 with two RBI's. Ellie Hansen was the final Pirate to have a multi-hit game as she was 2-for-3 with the home run, two RBI's and a walk.

After the rough first inning Fletcher was strong on the rubber and only allowed three hits and one run for the final four innings. She struck out four batters.

Snead State 3 PSC 2

The Pirates could never quite find their footing in the first game on Friday and fell to Snead State 3-2.

Snead got on the board in the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly. Pensacola pulled even in the third inning when Ellie Hansen singled and later scored on a ball off the bat of Madison Myers.

The Parsons responded in the top of the fourth with two runs courtesy of two errors. 

Down 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth the Pirates pushed across one run when Sajarie Jones walked and advanced to second on a single from Myers. Jones scored when the second baseman missplayed a batted ball from Susanna Soldi to pull the Pirates within one. Unfortunately, the rally ended when Myers tried to take home on a passed ball and was called out. 

Myers was 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and double. 

Jorja Barrett threw a complete game and only allowed one earned run off five hits while striking out six.

PSC 10 Wallace Hanceville 2 (5 innings)

Pensacola bounced back from their loss to take down Wallace State Hanceville in five innings in the nightcap Friday. 

The Pirates came out in the first inning with Madison Myers singling and scoring on a double from Maddy Childs. Childs eventually scored herself when Monique Poitevin singled up the middle. Hanceville responded in their half of the inning with two runs of their own.

In the second, Susanna Soldi drove in two runs with a double to right field and then scored herself on a single from Maddy Childs. Tori Fletcher then stepped to the plate and blasted a 2-run home run to make it 7-2.

The offense continued its output in the third inning when with two outs and two runners on Soldi drove a ball into the right field corner and wheeled around the bases for an inside the park home run. 

The defense held strong and the Pirates picked up the run rule win in five innings. Tori Fletcher had a strong outing in the cirlce as she struck out seven and scattered five hits.

Madison Myers (3 runs scored), Susanna Soldi (5 RBI's), Maddy Childs (2 doubles) and Tori Fletcher (home run) all collected two hits in the game. 

PSC 16 Lamar State-Port Arthur 6 (6 innings)

In the first game on Saturday the Pirate offense exploded for 16 runs and scored in every inning in the win over Lamar State.

Pensacola got the scoring party started right out the gate when Madison Myers led off with a single and stole second before Susanna Soldi smoked a triple to plate her. After a walk Tori Fletcher came to bat and drove a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for a 4-0 lead. 

In the bottom half of the inning Lamar was able to combine three walks and three hits to score three runs of their own.

The Pirates answered in the top of the second when Ellie Hansen singled and then scored on a double from Madison Myers to make it 5-3. They extended the lead in the third by using five singles to plate three more runs. 

In the top of the fourth the scoring continued when Raquel Latta drew a bases loaded walk and then Ellie Hansen drove in the 10th run on the game. Lamar strung a couple hits together in their half of the fourth to make it 10-5. 

Just like in the first inning Myers again led off with a single and stolen base before Soldi knocked her second triple of the game. Soldi scored on a passed ball to give the Pirates a 12-5 lead. 

After Lamar plated one run in the bottom of the fifth Ellie Hansen stepped to the plate and got the Pirates second inside the park home run of the weekend. Kat McGlamry also added a two RBI double in the inning. 

The Pirates logged a season high 20 hits in the game with Madison Myers (2 RBI's, 2B) and Tori Fletcher (4 RBI's, 2B, HR) leading the way both going 4-for-5.

Tori Fletcher picked up the win as she threw five innings of relief.

Bishop State 4 PSC 8

The final game of the weekend saw the Pirates down Bishop State 8-4. 

Madison Myers led off with a single and stole second before scoring on a single from Susanna Soldi. Soldi then was driven in by a double from Maddy Childs to make it 2-0.

After Bishop plated one run in the top of the third the Pirates responded in their half of the inning when Myers singled and stole second before scoring on Childs second double of the game. Tori Fletcher drove in Childs for PSC's fourth run of the game.

The score held until the bottom of the fifth when Ashley Valencia, Kylie Chambers and Raquel Latta all singled to load the bases for Sajarie Jones to knock a base clearing double to make it 7-1.

The Pirates picked up their eighth run of the game in the sixth inning when Susanna Soldi picked up her third triple of the weekend and scored on a single from Fletcher.

Bishop threatened in the seventh when they used four singles to plate three runs before the Pirates ended the game with a popup to catcher Kat McGlamry.

Tori Fletcher earned her fifth win of the week as she went the distance and struck out nine.

It was a torrid stretch for Pensacola as they won 11 out of 12 games over an eight day stretch. They will have a much deserved break this week before traveling to Sanford, Florida for the Courtney Miller Invitational the begins on Saturday, February 22nd.
