Pirates Defeat Wabash Valley

The Pensacola State softball team swept a doubleheader against Wabash Valley on Friday. The Pirates run ruled Wabash in the first game before taking them down in extra innings of the second game. Continue reading below for individual recaps.

Wabash 3 PSC 11 (5 innings)

Wabash used an RBI double to get on the board in the first inning, but the Pirates did not waste anytime responding. Maddy Childs smashed a solo homerun in the bottom of the first to make the score 1-1.

Pensacola took the lead for good in the second inning when Ashley Valencia led off with a homerun to right field. Later in the inning Ellie Hansen drove in another run with a single and the Pirates plated their fourth run of the game with a bunt single from Madison Myers.

The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the fourth inning. With runners on second and third Tori Fletcher laid down a perfect suicide squeeze to score PSC's fifth run. The sixth run scored on a fielder's choice from Monique Poitevin and then Wabash walked in a run with the bases loaded to make it 7-1.

An error and homerun in the top of the fifth gave Wabash their final runs of the game before Pensacola exploded for four runs in their half of the inning to end the game early.

Back-to-back singles from Sajarie Jones and Madison Myers set the table for Maddy Childs to drive in the eighth run of the game. A fielder's choice added one more run before Poitevin singled to score two runs and finish the game. 

Ashley Valencia was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 in the contest with a homerun and walk. Madison Myers (3 stolen bases), Maddy Childs (homerun, 2 RBI's) and Monique Poitevin (3 RBI's) all contributed two hits each. 

Tori Fletcher went the distance in the circle picking up her seventh win of the season. She only allowed five hits while striking out four and giving up one earned run.

Wabash 6 PSC 7 (8 innings)

It took extra innings, but the Pirates swept the doubleheader with a 7-6 win in the second game. 

Wabash held a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the second inning and the Pirates were able to put five runs on the board, all of them scored with two outs. A bases loaded single from Ellie Hansen scored two runs before Maddy Childs smashed a 3-run homerun that cleared the scoreboard in left center.

The Warriors used four hits in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-4 and they later tied the game in the top of the seventh and the teams went into extra innings.

Wabash used a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth to take the lead, but the Pirates responded in their half of the inning. 

Shaylan Whatman singled to tie the game and then advanced to scoring position courtesy of a sacrifice bunt from Raquel Latta. That setup Sajarie Jones to drive in the winning run with a single up the middle.

The Pirates recorded 12 hits in the game with Madison Myers leading the way going 4-for-4 with two doubles. Maddy Childs (homerun, 3 RBI's), Shaylan Whatman and Sajarie Jones all contributed two hits.

Raquel Latta and Tori Fletcher split the pitching duties with both throwing four innings. Fletcher was awarded the win and she only allowed one earned run and scattered four hits.
