Pirates Return to Action With Four Wins

The Pensacola State softball team returned to action this week and swept doubleheaders against Mississippi Gulf Coast and Coastal Alabama-South. Continue reading below for individual game recaps.

PSC 8 Miss. Gulf Coast 0 (6 innings)

The Pirates traveled to Perkinston, Mississippi on Monday to take on the NJCAA Division II no. 2 nationally ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast. 

Sajarie Jones led off the game with a walk and promptly scored on Ellie Hansen's triple off the centerfield wall. Maddy Childs plated Hansen and later in the inning Monique Poitevin singled to score Jenna Trim and make it 3-0.

The lead was extended in the fourth inning when Shaylan Whatman led off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly from Mya Geros. Jones added an RBI single to give the Pirates a 5-0 lead. 

Whatman led off the sixth inning with a solo homerun to right field. Kelsi Bargman reached on a error and scored on a double to left field courtesy of Geros. Geros eventually scored on a hard hit ground ball to shortstop by Susanna Soldi to give Pensacola an 8-0 advantage.

Shaylan Whatman was 2-for-3 with a homerun and Mya Geros was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI's.

Jorja Barrett toed the rubber for PSC and threw a complete game striking out five and only allowing three hits.

PSC 10 Miss. Gulf Coast 3

In game two the Pirates stole the lead late in the game and recorded a 10-3 victory.

Pensacola was trailing by two in the fifth inning when the offense got fired up. Shaylan Whatman started things with a walk and Kelsi Bargman singled to set the table before Susanna Soldi walked to load the bases. Ellie Hansen hit a ground ball to the pitcher who threw it away at first base to allow two runs to cross the plate and tie the game. Then Maddy Childs stepped to the plate and stroked a ball over the centerfield fence to give PSC a 5-2 lead.

Mississippi answered in their half inning with a solo homerun before the Pirates put the game out of reach in the sixth. Monique Poitevin tripled and scored on a double from Whatman. Then Bargman singled to drive in the Pirates seventh run. Soldi eventually doubled drive in run number eight and Hansen drove in Geros for the ninth run.

Avery Beauchaine got the start in the circle for the Pirates and picked up her fourth win of the season. Heleena Reinhardt entered the game in the fifth inning to shut things down and earn her first save of the season. She threw 2.1 innings and struck out two while giving up zero hits.

Monique Poitevin, Shaylan Whatman and Kelsi Bargman each recorded two hits in the game while Ellie Hansen and Maddy Childs both drove in three runs apiece. 

PSC 11 Coastal AL-South 3

The Pirate bats stayed hot on Tuesday as the team pounded out 12 hits in the win.

Ellie Hansen got things going in the third when she hit a bases clearing triple and scored herself off a long fly ball from Maddy Childs to give the Pirates a 4-0 lead. 

In the fifth the Pirates used doubles from Hansen and Jenna Trim combined with sacrifice flies from Monique Poitevin and Shaylan Whatman to make the score 8-1.

Pensacola plated an additional three runs in the sixth thanks to back-to-back doubles from Hansen and Childs and a sacrifice fly from Adriana Sierra.

Jorja Barrett pitched a complete game and picked up her sixth win of the season.

Kelsi Bargman was perfect at the plate recording four hits while Hansen was 3-for-4 with two doubles and triple.

PSC 11 Coastal AL-South 0

Jenna Trim received the start in the second game and after giving up a hit to the lead off batter she shutdown the Sunchiefs.

A string of doubles from Susanna Soldi, Jenna Trim and Shaylan Whatman gave the Pirates a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Mya Geros kept the double party going in the second leading off with one and then scoring on a double steal. Later in the inning Soldi drove in the fifth run of the game for PSC.

The third inning saw Shaylan Whatman and Mya Geros both hit homeruns to extend the Pirates lead for 8-0. Eventually Maddy Childs joined the homerun club in the fifth with a solo shot.

Sajarie Jones, Susanna Soldi and Shaylan Whatman each recorded three hits in then game while Maddy Childs, Jenna Trim and Mya Geros all collected two hits each.

Trim picked up her third win of the season going the distance and striking out five while only giving up the one hit.
