Softball Adds Three Wins

The Pirate softball team faced off against two stellar Mississippi schools last week on back-to-back days. Pensacola hosted and swept Mississippi Gulf Coast (MGC) on Wednesday and then traveled to Pearl River on Thursday. Continue reading below for individual game recaps.

MGC 3 PSC 6

Pensacola nabbed the lead late in the game and secured a 6-3 victory on Wednesday night. The game was tied at three in the bottom of the sixth when Jenna Trim smashed a ball off the scoreboard to plate three runs.

In the second inning, PSC got their offense started when Tori Ratigan singled to drive in the first run of the game and was followed by an RBI ground out from Susanna Soldi.

Lydia Drake was in control on the rubber and the southpaw threw a complete game while striking out 10 and only allowing five hits.

Jenna Trim and Tori Ratigan were both 2-for-3 with a walk, runs batted in and Ratigan picked up a stolen base. Mya Geros was 1-for-2 with an RBI and walk.

MGC 5 PSC 7

In the second game Pensacola jumped out to an early lead and took home a 7-5 win.

The Bulldogs drove across two runs to start the game in the top of the first, but the Pirates responded in the bottom of the second with four runs of their own. Cameron Wolfenden singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Skylar Buzbee before Kelsi Bargman singled to put two runners on. Mya Geros laced a double to right to drive in PSC's first run. Then Tori Ratigan and Georgia Hood each recorded singles to make it 4-2 Pirates.

The scoring continued in the bottom of the third when Bargman drove in Pensacola's fifth run and Geros knocked in run number six.

Mississippi Gulf Coast used two runs in the top of the fourth to pull within one, but Pensacola was able to add one more insurance run in the fifth.

Pensacola recorded 11 hits in the game with Mya Geros going a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI's. Kelsi Bargman was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Georgia Hood was 2-for-3 with two RBI's.

Avery Beauchaine picked up the win in the circle throwing 5.1 innings and allowing three earned runs while Presley Williams came on in relief and got the save while not allowing any hits.

PSC 1 Pearl River 8

Pensacola turned around and hit the road to Pearl River Community College on Thursday and ran into a buzz saw the first game.

The Wildcat's pitcher Brinson Rogers struck out 19 batters in the win.

Cameron Buzzell was the only Pirate successful at the plate when she stroked a solo homerun in the fourth.

In the second game Pensacola bounced back and picked up a solid 6-1 win.

Jenna Trim had her own dominant performance in the circle striking out a season high 11 batters and only allowing four hits.

The bats finally came alive in the top of the third when Brianna Duggins started things with a triple off the right field fence. Tori Ratigan drove her and Mya Geros in with a single to center. With two outs Georgia Hood stepped to the plate and blasted a 2-run homerun to make it 4-0.

Geros added an RBI double in the fourth to give the Pirates a 5-0 lead. The Pirates final run of the game was a resounding solo homerun from Jenna Trim in the fifth.

Brianna Duggins was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a triple while Mya Geros was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jenna Trim had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with her homerun.

Pensacola is currently 19-3 and will host Southeastern Illinois on Thursday at 3:00 and 5:00 pm.
