Softball Takes Down Chipola

The Pirate softball team traveled to Marianna, Florida on Friday to face Chipola in an important doubleheader. Pensacola swept the day and moved into a tie for first place in the Panhandle Conference. Continue reading below for individual game recaps.

#13 PSC 2 #9 Chipola 1

Pitching was strong on both sides in game one and the score remained a zero until the bottom of the fifth. Chipola's lead off batter reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a ground ball. After the Pirate defense secured the second out a Chipola batter drove a ball into center field that scored the first run of the game. The batter tried to advance to second but was cut down by a throw from Brandie Seber to end the inning.

The Pirates came to the plate in the top of the sixth and Brianna Duggins started things with a double. Pinch runner Maddison Coones advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Lydia Drake. With two outs Mya Geros singled through the left side to tie the game. Tori Ratigan drew a walk to put runners on first and second and Susanna Soldi singled to left field to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. 

Chipola only got one more baserunner the rest of the game and the Pirates held on for the win. Brianna Duggins was perfect at the plate going 4-for-4 with a double while Jenna Trim was 2-for-4 with a double. 

Lydia Drake was strong in the circle throwing a complete game and only gave up three hits while striking out three. This was her 11th win on the season.

The Pirates came out strong in the second game and put up two runs in the first courtesy of an RBI double from Jenna Trim and and sacrifice fly from Brianna Duggins.

Pensacola extended the lead to three runs in the third inning when Susanna Soldi drew a walk and eventually scored on a double off the bat of Duggins.

Scoring continued in the fourth inning for PSC when Cameron Buzzell drew a leadoff walk and pinch runner Brandie Seber advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. An error by the shortstop put runners on the corners before Mya Geros stole second. With two outs Georgia Hood drove a ball up the middle to score both runner and give Pensacola a 5-0 lead.

Chipola got on the board in the fifth inning after the leadoff batter walked and scored on a missplayed ball in center field that also got stuck in the ivy. Their second run scored on a ground ball to second, but the Pirate defense stepped up and got out of the inning.

The Indians used three singles in the sixth inning to add one more run before pitcher Georgia Hood closed the door on them by striking out two batters to end the threat. 

In the seventh Chipola knocked on the door again getting two baserunners on, but a pop out ended the game.

Georgia Hood and Brianna Duggins were both 1-for-3 in the game with two RBI's while Jenna Trim was 1-for-3 with an RBI double. 

Georgia Hood went the distance on the mound and scattered eight hits while striking out nine and only allowed one earned run. This was her 10th win of the season.

In the NJCAA poll released today, the Pirates moved up to the no. 10 spot.
