Softball Wins Panhandle Championship

The 10th ranked Pensacola State softball team secured the Panhandle Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon. They traveled to Tallahassee on Friday afternoon and swept the doubleheader to put them into first place and after Chipola and Northwest Florida split on Saturday it meant the Pirates could secure the Championship on Sunday with two wins. Pensacola came out and took care of business with two run-rule victories and claimed the Championship for the second year in a row. Continue reading below for recaps of all four games.

Friday Game 1: PSC 6 TCC 4

Pensacola got on the board first in the third inning when Isabelle Hanna and Mya Geros reached on singles to set the table for Susanna Soldi to single to centerfield and Hanna scored on an error. Then Georgia Hood drove a double to right to plate two more runs.

In the fifth, Soldi reached on a error and Jenna Trim doubled before Brianna Duggins blasted a 2-RBI triple to right to give PSC a 5-0 lead. The bottom of the frame saw TCC score three runs courtesy of four hits and the score was 5-3.

Mya Geros kicked off the sixth inning with a solo homerun to left to give the Pirates an extra insurance run.

The Eagles threatened in the seventh with a solo homerun, but the defense held and PSC won.

Brianna Duggins was 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI's and a triple while Mya Geros was 2-for-2 with a homerun. Lydia Drake threw a complete game and won her 13th game of the season while striking out three.

Friday Game 2: PSC 5 TCC 2

The second game saw Tallahassee holding a 2-1 lead going into the top of the fifth. Tori Ratigan reached on an error and Susanna Soldi singled to set the table for Georgia Hood to drive in the tying run with a double to left field. Jenna Trim followed with a sacrifice fly to right to give PSC the 3-2 lead.

The score held until the sixth when with a runner on and two outs, Mya Geros blasted her second homerun of the game to make it 5-2. Georgia Hood locked things down in the circle and struck out three of the final six batters to close the game.

Tori Ratigan and Georgia Hood were both 3-for-4 at the plate and Brianna Duggins added two hits. Georgia Hood threw a complete game to pick up her 11th win, striking out six in the game.

Sunday Game 1: TCC 0 PSC 8 (6 innings)

The Pirates pulled off the big win by scoring in five of the six innings. They were ahead 6-0 going into the bottom of the sixth and Georgia Hood and Jenna Trim recorded back-to-back singles before Cameron Buzzell singled to drive in Hood. 

With two outs Isabelle Hanna stepped up to the plate and singled through the right side to end the game early.

The Pirates recorded 11 hits in the game with Mya Geros and Isabelle Hanna both going 2-for-3 with an RBI. 

Lydia Drake was solid on the rubber allowing only four hits and striking out nine on her way to her 14th win.

Sunday Game 2: TCC 2 PSC 10 (6 innings)

Pensacola was ahead 1-0 going into the second inning when Cameron Buzzell singled and Kelsi Bargman walked to allow Avery Beauchaine to sacrifice both runners into scoring position. Mya Geros singled to drive in PSC's second run and was followed by Tori Ratigan picking up an RBI on a ground out. An error allowed Pensacola to plate another run and take a 4-0 lead.

After TCC scored one run in the third, the Pirates got it back in the bottom of the fourth when Mya Geros tripled and scored on a single from Tori Ratigan.

The Eagles used an error in the sixth to make the score 5-2 heading into the bottom of the inning. Kelsi Bargman started things with a single followed by Cameron Wolfenden reaching on a error. After a sacrifice bunt Tori Ratigan singled to drive in a run and Susanna Soldi drew a walk to load the bases. Georgia Hood walked to plate PSC's 7th run and Jenna Trim singled to drive in two more runs. Brianna Duggins stepped in the box and delivered the walk off RBI single to end the game early and give Pensacola the Panhandle Championship.

The Pirates had 13 hits in the game with Tori Ratigan going 3-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored. The Aussie trio of Jenna Trim, Georgia Hood and Mya Geros all added two hits each in the game.

Avery Beauchaine went the distance to pick up her 6th win of the season. She only allowed one earned run.

Pensacola will travel to Sanford, Florida for the State Tournament that begins on May 6th.
