Softball Opens Season with Two Wins

The Pensacola State softball team traveled to Clearwater, Florida for the annual JUCO Kickoff Classic this past weekend. The no. 11 ranked Pirates split their games winning two and dropping two games to nationally ranked opponents. Continue reading below for individual game recaps.

#11 PSC 0 #17 Parkland 1

The Pirates out hit Parkland and pitcher Lydia Drake had a strong performance, but PSC came up short in their opening game.

An RBI double with two runners on base in the seventh did the Pirates in.

Georgia Hood was 2-for-4 with a double and Bre'Asia Thomas had a double for PSC. Lydia Drake threw a complete game and struck out 13 batters.

#11 PSC 13 USC Union 0 (5 innings)

Pensacola bounced back in their second game and made short work of the Bantams.

The Pirates put multiple runs on the board in four out of the five innings. Freshman Kylee Crowder was perfect in her debut going 3-for-3 with two home runs and a double with five RBI's. Brianna Duggins was 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI while Tori Ratigan was 2-for-2 with three stolen bases. Freshman Kasey Markusic recorded her first home run of the season with three RBI's.

Freshman pitcher Madison Sabo picked up her first win of the year throwing 3.2 innings and only allowed two hits. Presley Williams closed out the game and struck out one in 1.1 innings.

#11 PSC 2 #1 Florida Southwestern 6

Pensacola out hit the number one ranked Buccaneers on Saturday, but had some errors that proved costly. 

An error and 2-run home run put the Pirates behind 3-0 in the first inning. The Pirates finally got on the board in the fourth inning when Susanna Soldi led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Brianna Duggins.

Pensacola threatened in the seventh, but could only push one run across.

Tori Ratigan, Susanna Soldi and Bre'Asia Thomas each went 2-for-4 in the game.

#11 PSC 8 East Georgia State 1

The Pirates closed out the weekend with solid win over East Georgia. 

Georgia Hood kicked off the scoring with a solo home run in the third inning. She smashed her second home run in the sixth. Kylee Crowder hit her third home run of the weekend in the seventh inning.

Pensacola recorded 10 hits in the game with Georgia Hood going 3-for-3 with three RBI. Kylee Crowder and Tori Ratigan contributed two hits each.

Freshman pitcher Gabriella Lindsey threw a complete game for her first win of the season. She only gave up four hits and struck out four with no earned runs.
