The Pensacola State Pirates kicked off their weekend Invitational with an impressive victory over the No. 24 ranked John A. Logan. The Pirates' offense came alive in the third inning when Karri Pritchard launched a solo home run, putting Pensacola State on the board. Katelyn Morgan followed with a walk, advanced on a misplayed ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Alexis Zerquera, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
The Pirates added an insurance run in the fifth inning with an RBI double from Katelyn Morgan and John A. Logan managed to score their lone run in the sixth inning, courtesy of an error.
Yala Zwakman was stellar on the mound, earning her second win of the season. She threw a complete game, allowing only four hits and striking out six batters. Karri Pritchard led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a home run.
Motlow 13 PSC 8
In the second game of the day on Friday, the Pensacola State Pirates struggled defensively and ultimately fell to Motlow. Despite taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Pirates saw the score tied at 3-3 by the end of the second inning.
The Pirates regained the lead in the fifth inning, going up 8-7, but Motlow mounted a strong comeback, scoring six runs in the sixth inning to secure the win. Defensive errors plagued the Pirates, with five miscues contributing to their downfall.
Offensively, Karri Pritchard had a standout performance, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a walk. Katelyn Morgan also shone, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a triple. Kayleigh Cuccia was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks. Keira Trim added two hits and an RBI.
Despite the offensive efforts, the Pirates' defensive struggles sealed their fate in this matchup.
Motlow 4 PSC 12 (5 innings)
The Pensacola State Pirates avenged their previous loss to Motlow with a thrilling victory in their Saturday rematch. The Pirates came out strong, scoring four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a clutch 2-RBI single from Lynden Cole.
Motlow responded with four runs of their own in the second inning, but Kaitlyn Gilmore settled in and dominated the rest of the game from the circle. The Pirates sealed the win in dramatic fashion in the fifth inning when Alexis Zerquera hit a rocket single to center field that ricocheted off the fielder, allowing three runs to score, including herself.
The Pirates' offense was on fire, tallying 13 hits with every batter recording at least one. Gabbie York and Keira Trim led the charge with three hits each. Gilmore earned her first win of the season, going the distance and striking out three batters.
Roane State 1 PSC 0
The final game of the weekend Invitational turned into a pitching and defensive duel, with the Pensacola State Pirates narrowly falling to Roane. Roane scored their lone run in the second inning off a hit-and-run play that found the fence.
Offensively, the Pirates struggled to get going, with Gabbie York and Anna Reily being the only players to record a hit. Despite the lack of run support, Yala Zwakman delivered a strong performance on the mound, giving up only four hits, but unfortunately took the loss.
The Pirates will look to bounce back as they travel to Mississippi Gulf Coast on Tuesday, February 11th, for a doubleheader.
