Lady Pirates Have Tough Weekend

The Pensacola State women's basketball team played three games last week and picked up one win. They hosted Bishop State after the Thanksgiving break before playing in the Florida College's Women's Basketball Shootout at Northwest Florida State. Continue reading below for individual game recaps.

Bishop State 49 PSC 66

It was a tough one Tuesday night in Hartsell Arena against the Bishop State Lady Wildcats.

The Lady Pirates hit the ground running leading 36-18 at the half. To start the third quarter Bishop State came back with a lot of pressure and outscored the Lady Pirates bringing the game closer.

The fourth quarter saw PSC fight back to finish the game strong and hold on to the victory. 

ZaMaria Polk led all scores with 17 points, Kaiya Burnett contributed 13 points and Anita Payne had a solid outing with 10 points and four steals.

St. Petersburg 65 PSC 57

The Lady Pirates saw their 11 game win streak come to a close on Friday when they fell to St. Petersburg. 

Shots from the field and free throws were not falling early and St. Pete took an 11 point lead into halftime.

Despite a big turn around in the second half and bringing the game within two points, it was not enough. 

Kaiya Burnett led the team in scoring with 16 points and had four steals. ZaMaria Polk followed behind with 12 points and seven rebounds while Jordyn Neal was also in double figures with 11 points and four assists.

Florida Southwestern 61 PSC 54

Pensacola State dropped a hard fought game to no. 14 ranked Florida Southwestern on Saturday. 

Both teams struggled to make shots and dealt with turnovers in the first half, but the Lady Pirates did take a 23-19 lead into halftime.

The Buccaneers came out strong in the third quarter to secure the lead and did not look back. 

Kaiya Burnett had another strong outing as she led PSC with 16 points while ZaMaria Polk added 12 and Jordyn Neal 11. Polk was also the leading rebounder for the Lady Pirates with seven.

Pensacola State will host Bossier Parish Community College at home on Friday, December 13th at 5:30 pm.
