Volleyball Goes 4-0 Over Weekend

The Pensacola State volleyball team had a successful weekend as they went 4-0 at the Pirate Invitational. The two day tournament was hosted by PSC at the Milton campus.

The Pirates opened Friday with a 3-2 victory over Lee College (TX). Lee took the first game of the match before PSC rallied to sweep the second and third set. A fifth set was needed and the Pirates pulled out the win. Sophomore transfer Beaudine Verweij helped power the offense with nine kills in the match while freshman Soliel Trejo recorded 16 digs on defense.

In a re-match from last week PSC took a 3-1 win over Snead State in the second match of the day. The offense was led by Alex Pierre and Madison Fisher who each tallied 12 kills while again Trejo had a team best 19 digs.

On Saturday, PSC avenged another loss from last weekend when they won a hard fought 3-2 match over Gadsden State. Brook-Lynn Sandford pounded out 16 kills in the match and the defense help strong on the back line with the help of Reilly Landreneau (22 digs) and Madison Fisher (20 digs).

A 3-0 defeat of Southern Union State completed the sweep of the weekend. Every Pirate saw action in the match with Kasey Scott recording seven kills and Landreneau 17 digs.

Head coach Jennie Belarmino assessed the weekend by saying, "There was competitive play at the tournament and our offense is looking stronger everyday and our defense is what is keeping us in matches. Soleil Trejo had a great weekend with 59 digs. I am happy with the progress the team has made - communication and team chemistry was key in the victories."

The Pirates now sport a 5-5 record on the season and will travel to Daytona State this weekend for a tournament. "I am pleased with where we are at as a group at this moment, but now it's back to work this week to prepare for the Daytona trip," said Belarmino.
