Volleyball Opens Season With Two Wins

The Pirates opened their 2021 campaign on Friday by defeating Florida Gateway College in three straight sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-16). 

Amaya Bazemore led the Pirates with 15 kills and hit .636 for the match, which is her second highest hitting percentage of her playing career. Last season her career high was .684 against Daytona State.

Cheyenne Strickland came out strong in the backrow and reached double digits in digs with 10 while adding three service aces in the match.

On Saturday, the Pirates battled to a tough win over a strong Florida State College of Jacksonville squad. 

Pensacola started the match strong winning the first set 25-18, but the Blue Waves did not back down. 

In the second set Jacksonville had set point with a 24-22 lead, but the Pirates reeled off four straight points to take the 26-24 win and never looked back.

The Pirates ran away with the third set handily winning 25-12. 

Amaya Bazemore once again led PSC in kills with 12, while Cheyenne Strickland added nine and Sophia Ortega chipped in eight. Katrina Espinosa helped fuel the offense with 25 assists in both games over the weekend. Charley Drain contributed nine assists on Friday and 10 on Saturday. 

Pensacola will travel to Palm Beach State on Friday to face the Panthers at 5:00 pm.
