The Pensacola volleyball team reeled off five wins this week to move 11-2 on the season.
The victories started on Wednesday when the Pirates picked up their first non-conference win over Coastal Alabama-East. The Warhawk defense could not contain Kaytie Rutland as she had 10 kills with a .474 hitting average. Rutland nearly doubled her offensive numbers from her last match against Palm Beach State.
All the excitement was not just happening from the front row, the Pirates found their groove behind the service line and added 15 aces to mark their best serving performance of the season so far. Kat Espinosa alone supplied 1/3 of the service aces for the night.
The Pirates hit the road on Friday and remained undefeated away as they brought home three tough wins. It was nothing short of a miracle that PSC pulled off three wins back-to-back after battling three strong opponents in less than 24 hours, including a 3-2 win over the 15th nationally ranked team Lake-Sumter.
Friday, September 24th was a well fought battle as both teams showed tremendous effort playing defense. Florida State College at Jacksonville gave the Pirates a hard match by not allowing the ball to drop on their side of the net and forcing Pensacola to get more creative with their offense.
After many long rallies, the Pirates were able to come out on top and win 3-1 against the Blue Waves. Kaytie Rutland led the Pirates with 16 kills, hitting .382 with the help from her teammate and setter Charley Drain who dished out a season high 26 assists.
The Pirates then packed their bags and headed to Florida Gateway for an early 10:00 am match against #15 in the country, Lake-Sumter.
This five-set match was a roller coaster of emotions for both teams with the momentum swinging back and forth up until the last ball dropped on the Lakehawks' side of court. Pensacola held onto an exciting 3-2 win ending the fifth game on a heart-stopping 16-14 score.
Plagued by one of their worst serving games of the season, the Pirates were able to rely on their incredible defensive mindset, highlighted by Cheyenne Strickland picking up 25 digs in the match. Sophia Ortega and Amaya Bazemore both collected 12 kills apiece to put away a very well-rounded Lake-Sumter team.
The road trip did not end there because the Pirates had 40 minutes to gear back up and play Florida Gateway that same day.
After a very necessary snack break, the Pirates put their kneepads back on and pulled off a well-earned 3-1 win over the Timberwolves. Florida Gateway started the match on fire, not allowing the Pirates to catch their breath, but Pensacola State quickly turned the table around in the second set and earned their momentum back.
Kaytie Rutland saw the opportunity and proved that it is possible to have an almost unheard of volleyball performance by making a statement securing 16 kills, no errors, with a stellar .696 hitting percentage.
Just when you think the week was over, the Pirates returned home on Sunday and hosted one more match against a very gritty and relentless Northwest Mississippi Community College team.
The long rallies kept the fans in the gym longer and on the edge of their seats. Pensacola State was able to come out on top with a 3-1 win over the Lady Rangers. There was a high level of defense from both sides of the net and freshman Julia Neveu pulled off 27 digs in the four set match.
The weekend could not end without recognizing an amazing performance by Sophia Ortega throughout the entire week. She had a double-double in four out of the five matches, totaling 59 kills and 73 digs, bringing a well-balanced offensive and defensive game for the Pirates.
Kaytie Rutland herself scored a total of 70 points for PSC, adding a mix of blocks and kills for her team, averaging 3.5 points earned per set to help the Pirates achieve every win this week.
Julia Neveu led the back court with 104 digs total for the week, keeping the Pirates in constant contention for all the matches.
The Pirates will finally have a weekend at home, facing South Florida State College on Friday, October 1st at 4:00 pm. On Saturday, October 2nd, the Pirates host their 1st annual Pirates in Pink match, facing Palm Beach State College at 12:00 pm.
The Pirates in Pink match is focused to bring attention and awareness to breast cancer. Wear your favorite pink outfit and come support your Pirates. More details to follow on social media throughout the week.
