Pirates Win Two Over the Weekend

Pensacola State faced three tough conference opponents this past weekend and finished with a 2-1 record.

The Pirates started their weekend marathon on Friday against St. Petersburg, being able to win a long and hard-fought battle in five sets. The Friday match was full of emotions with both teams having the momentum on their side of the net at different times making it clear on the scoreboard. PSC won the 1st set 25-7, but St Pete did not back down and took the 2nd game, winning 25-10. As the momentum kept swinging back and forth between both teams, the Pirates decided to take charge and win the last and final set 15-5, hitting an outstanding .500. Jada Lowry led the Pirates with 6.5 blocks, while Brooke Sproat added 16 kills for the match.  

On Saturday, the Pirates faced the newest team to join the Sun-Lakes Conference, State College of Florida (Manatee-Sarasota). Anyaliz Rodriguez commanded the front row with 20 kills, while Kiara Vega led the team in digs and assists (21). PSC finished the match 3-0 against the Manatees, hitting .230. 

The final and last match for the weekend was against a relentless Pasco-Hernando defensive team. The Pirates dropped the match against Bobcats in four sets. PSC took the first set 28-26, but then ended up dropping the next three games.  

Anyaliz Rodriguez finished the weekend with a double-double in every match, totaling 54 kills, averaging 4.5 kills per set. Brooke Sproat was right behind with 40 kills, and Tiana Curry added 36 kills for the weekend. Julia Neveu and Rodriguez tied in digs with 58 apiece, while Kat Espinosa led in assists with 64. Jada Lowry had an outstanding defensive weekend, helping her team with 15 blocks over the course of the three matches.  

The Pirates are on the road next, facing South Florida State College on Friday, September 9th at 3:00 pm CST and Palm Beach State College on Saturday, September 10th at 12:00 pm CST.
