Pirates Keep Win Streak Alive

Pirates Keep Win Streak Alive

The Pirates closed out an exciting week adding three more wins to their streak, currently at 11 straight since their last loss.

Pensacola State started the week playing against Lurleen B. Wallace, finishing the match in three straight sets, hitting .215 in the game.

The very next day, the Pirates went on the road to play Gulf Coast State College. PSC started the match hot, winning the first set, but the Commodores decided to come back and won the second game to pull even.

The entire match went back and forth, with the momentum changing every four or five points. Neither team was letting their opponent take over the match. The fifth and final set started with a 5-0 lead from Pensacola State, but Gulf Coast found their way back 5-3, and the point differential stayed at no more than two points away until it was 13-11. That is when the Pirates decided to score the last two points back-to-back, to end the match winning in five sets and acquiring their 20th win for the season.

The excitement was not over yet, as the Pirates got back on the road and faced the then number one team in the conference, Florida State College at Jacksonville. The Blue Waves took over the entire first set, not allowing the Pirates to even take a breath. Yet, somehow PSC found their way back into the set, closing the gap between the teams, losing the game 25-19.

The Pirates started the second game on fire with a 12-3 lead, but FSCJ slowly, but surely created a little bit of momentum towards the end of the set, but the Pirates still won the game 25-17.

The match was full of emotions from both sides, the momentum kept shifting all the way into the fifth set. The final set was not looking good for the Pirates, since the Blue Waves had four match points in a row, holding a 10-14 score. Pensacola found a way to go ahead 15-14 and from that point on, the match had four more ties throughout the last six points. The Pirates finally ended this exciting match, winning 20-18, taking home another victory.

Brooke Sproat finished the week leading the Pirates offensively with a total of 45 kills (hitting .284) and also added 10 blocks.

Julia Neveu helped PSC win this week with a total of 68 digs (5.23 digs per set), consistently having 27 digs each of her last two matches. Kiara Vega led the Pirates in assists with 70 assists for the week (5.38 assists per set).
