Pirates Secure Regular Season Championship

Pensacola State College volleyball had a tough week of games, but they prevailed in all and extended their win streak to 14.

The Pirates started the week playing against two teams on Tuesday. The first opponent of the day was Andrew College and PSC dominated all three games, winning the match in straight sets.

Pensacola State ended the match with a total of six blocks, hitting .352 for the match.

The following match was a back and forth battle with Enterprise State Community College and went to all five sets. PSC started off winning, but Enterprise would not let up and came back winning the second set. Both teams kept alternating the wins, taking the match to a fifth and final game.

The Pirates came out unapologetically and did not let the Boll Weevils catch up with them the entire fifth set. Winning the match and closing out the day with two victories.

Two days later PSC faced Florida State College at Jacksonville. The Thursday match had first seeding implications for PSC, as they had to win in order to hold the overall number one seed in conference. Pensacola started strong winning the first set 25-16, but the Blue Waves turned it around starting the next set winning with a 4-point differential and for the most part, holding onto the lead all the way to the end, winning the second set. Pensacola held the Blue Waves during the entire third set, winning the third game as they headed to the fourth set.

FSCJ slowly but surely fought their way back into the fourth set, tying the game up 24-24, fighting for one last tie at 25-25, then PSC took over and finished the match 27-25, holding steady as regular season Conference Champions.

Anyaliz Rodriguez led the Pirates in kills once again with 35 (hitting .149), followed by Tiana Curry with 31 kills (hitting .210), and Brooke Sproat with 30 (hitting .217). Defensively, Paige Patterson held the opponents bringing 18 total blocks to closeout the week, and Julia Neveu kept the Pirates in the game with 47 digs.

The Pirates will face their first opponent this Friday, November 4th, at the 2022 FCSAA/NJCAA Division II Gulf District tournament at 4:30 pm (EST). The opponent will be the winner of the 9:00 am (EST) match.

If the Pirates win their first match, they will then advance to the championship round on Saturday, November 5th, at 1:00 pm (EST).
