Volleyball Wins Two Over Weekend

Pensacola State faced three solid opponents at the Best Western Santa Fe Classic this past weekend and finished with a 2-1 record. 

The Pirates launched their weekend on Friday, August 25th with a 3-0 sweep against Lurleen B. Wallace CC. Sophomore outside hitter Anyaliz Rodriguez led the Pirates with 20 kills, followed by sophomore, outside hitter Lyndi Bakker with 10 kills in the match. Five players from the Pirates were all in double digits for digs which was led by freshman, defensive specialist Maddie Mire with 23. Sophomore setter Kiara Vega brought in 11 digs and 38 assists on the match.  

Pensacola took a tough loss in their second match of the tournament on Saturday, August 26th, against Enterprise State CC. The first set between the Pirates and Bol Wheevils was a point for point showdown, finishing 30-28 in favor of PSC. Enterprise State fired back with a win over the second set, and carried the momentum through the rest of the match. The Pirates fought to stay in it, but dropped the match in four sets.  

Pensacola State closed their weekend with a clean 3-0 sweep against the host Santa Fe Saints. Rodriguez set the tone for the Pirates to take on the Saints, finishing the match with 20 kills, hitting 0.333, while Vega led in assists with 38. The Pirates had a total of 57 digs on the match, led by Mire with 15, while their front line brought in a total of 14 blocks led by freshman, middle blocker Hailey Snider with five. 

On the entire weekend, the Pirates totaled 131 kills, led by Rodriguez with 51 and 128 attempts, while Vega set the team up for success with 121 assists for the weekend. PSC stepped up on defense with 220 balls dug throughout the weekend, Mire had the most with 52. The team tallied a total of 39 blocks on the weekend led by Snider with 11.  

The Pirates look forward to hosting their Pensacola State College Invitational Tournament during Labor Day weekend, August 31-September 2, where they will face four dominant opponents.
