Soccer Wins First Game in School History

The Pensacola State College Pirates picked up a season opening 3-2 win over Hinds Community College in Pensacola at Ashton Brosnaham Park on Friday.

The Pirates found themselves down 2-0 early in the first half. A ball played by Alexis Parscal from the right wing to Paige Phillips, who found herself get clipped by an Eagles defender. The referee awarded a penalty kick and Paige Phillips stepped up to put the ball in the back of the net. It was the first goal in school history.

Phillips found herself taking a corner kick a few minutes later which an Eagles defender deflected into her own goal to tie the game at two.

The Pirates outshot the Eagles 10 to 3 in the first half. In the second half the Eagles created many more opportunities on goal, but Freshman goalkeeper Remy Redmon kept the Pirates in the game. With nine minutes remaining in the game, freshman Ella David took the ball off the defender and shot to the bottom left corner only for the goalkeeper to get a hand on it for a corner kick. Phillips stepped up for another corner except this time finding the head of Maddie Motes. The Eagles keeper got a hand on it, but the header was too powerful to be kept out of the goal.

First year head coach, Mark Yepishin said this after the game, "Our players had a huge mountain to climb after the first 20 minutes of the match, I'm super proud of how they kept fighting and did not give up. I'm excited to see what the future has for us with these players."

Next, the Pirates go on the road to face Spring Hill College, a Division II NCAA Program that plays in the Gulf South Conference on Tuesday at 3:30 PM.
